Blue walking iris
My pots of Neomarica caerulea 'Regina' are beginning to bloom. These bigger versions of the blue walking iris are spectacular in a large pot raised off the ground allowing the bloom-bearing leaves to arch over.
Mine hasn't bloomed yet, and I think it's the blue one (shame on me for not knowing the colors of my own flower-children). It strolls all over my garden.
Hey, Deborah. You're certainly not the only one! I have all kinds of plants in the garden that I've forgotten what they are. It especially applies to iris. When they bloom, I must take photos and use labels. I am so disorganized ...
Oh, just visited "Simply Susan"'s site, and she is posting her gorgeous blue iris as well! Now seeing yours here again really make me want one now in my garden! It is just stunning pretty, and I love it! I did not see it for sale anywhere :(
I love the way you have this iris potted so the blooms can arch over. I just bought one of these and planted it in ground where it is beautiful too. Mine has some buds on it but they haven't opened yet. Yours is gorgeous.
The first time I saw these, they were in a pot and blooming like crazy. It was an amazing sight. I've never managed to get them to flower like that, but I suspect it has something to do with being pot bound.
James, they should do well in your neck of the woods; they are a tropical species.
Thanks, Hannelore. I have three large pots of N. caerulea and all have produced plantlets, most of which I've given away. The iris only flowers in the spring, but they look nice all year, anyway. I'll post more pics next season.
Thank you for the information - I just couldn't remember the correct name, so I googled "blue walking iris."I'm in Durban, South Africa. Mine are in bloom at present - our Spring.Love to have blue in the garden! Mine are planted next to pink My Granny roses, with white Star Jasmine on an arch behind. Regards, Laurelle Barnett.

ReplyDeleteThis iris is a real beauty in the garden. I love the super tall leaves. Ami...I bought mine at Home Depot last year, but I saw a bunch there today.

Wonderful Neomarica! Did it already make plantlings? Please have a look on my site http://www.neomarica.de/English
ReplyDeleteIf you see something you'd like we could exchange plantlings.
