Amazon lily

Sorry about the poor photo, I was experimenting and forgot to take better ones.

Anyway, for the first time my Amazon lily (Eucharis grandiflora), which I keep in a clay pot, has flowered. I've had the plant for years and always kept it in shade, per most horticultural recommendations. Then, I read somewhere that they like sun, so I moved it into a sunny pot, and Hey Presto, it flowered! Go figure!

Gorgeous! (Even through the blurriness.) I should try those. Lucky for you it was in a pot so that you could move it around.

Very pretty. Isn't it great when we can find the right treatment to make our plants happy? You were rewarded with a beautiful bloom.

Ooh, Amazon lilies are some of my favorite bulbs! I do indeed grow mine in deep shade, right in the ground. They have the most beautiful flowers!

@Debbie: They're easy to grow, but note that snails love them...

@Nana:Bearing in mind FG's comment below yours, I'm even more confused about why it's flowering.

@FG: I just rescued a pot of Amazon lilies that was languishing in deep, deep shade at a friends. It's never flowered -- and has huge leaves -- but now I don't know whether to tell her to grow them in sun. Perhaps it's something to do with the pot.

Oh, Penny: The flower is so stunning! Where do you guys buy those bulbs?! I feel I must have missed some secret place since I can not find any bulbs (except caladiums) suitable for Florida for sale here, such as rain lilies, and this Amazon Lily! I even love that huge leaf, so tropical!

Hey, Ami. I was given mine. You may be able to get them at Home Depot; I've bought caladiums and rain lilies and the like, there. Otherwise, look online. Good luck!

I love these flowers. My sister used to have a bunch of these in pots and for some reason I never got one. I didn't realize they would bloom better in sun. They do seem like a shade-loving plant. I'll have to keep my eyes open for one at my local nursery.

Hey, Susan. I was just reading that they don't like being disturbed and will take a long time (years) to bloom again if dug up and replanted. Maybe that's why mine took so long. Honestly, I have no idea whether they would have bloomed this year in the shade, anyway, or it was the sun. Florida Girl grows hers in deep shade ...

BTW, mine don't have a scent.

Penny, I have had mine in the same spot for 4 years. They took a couple of years to throw off the first blooms. They are slow growers and need to clump well before they bloom (kinda like the birds). As for light, mine do get early morning sun, but most of the day, they are in shade. Their blooms come in flushes. They bloom with several scapes, then rest for 2 or 3 months before blooming again. It is so exciting when it happens! I've also heard that they do not like to be disturbed, but I do plan to divide mine eventually, but probably just one plant per year, so I can keep some flowers.

Thanks, FG. More food for thought.

My Amazon Lilies came from a neighbor while they were blooming (several years ago). Since then I have moved them around a couple of time trying to find the right spot for them. They do get some shifting sunlight but mostly are shaded. I'm glad to know now that they don't like being moved around. Other than being one of the favorite foods of the Eastern Lubbers their foliage has given me great satisfaction.

I'm still hoping for some blooms from them. Maybe next year. Your blooms are beautiful!

Thanks, Meems. Since the flowering is over, I've moved the pot to a spot to a place where it doesn't get midday sun. (The leaves were beginning to look a bit bleached out.) I'm hoping that moving the pot doesn't constitute "disturbing" the bulbs! Anyway, we'll see what happens next spring.

Hi Penny - just hopped over here from gardenbloggers.com to reply to your question :)

I live in Chippenham which isn't far from Bath - will be going to an exhibition there tomorrow in fact. 2 Bath based garden bloggers hoped to attend, but unfortunately they can't make it. I hope to meet up with them very soon :)

Looks like you're enjoying your new home!

The amazon is beautiful! I love lilies of any kind, but this one is truly wonderful!

Hi, Kimberly. Are you growing them? If not, they really are lovely.

Very pretty looking plant - do they have fragrance?

They're supposed to, but I didn't notice one. Perhaps others can comment on that. Have you seen them growing there?
